Branches of Linguistics https://jurnal.uhn.ac.id/index.php/broling
Branches of Linguistics (BroLing) Journal FKIP UHN

Applied Linguistics publishes research into language with relevance to real-world issues. The journal is keen to help make connections between scholarly discourses, theories, and research methods from a broad range of linguistic and other relevant areas of study. The journal welcomes contributions that critically reflect current, cutting-edge theory and practice in applied linguistics.

The journal's Forum section is intended to stimulate contributions between authors and the wider community of branches of linguists and to afford a quicker turnaround time for short pieces. Forum pieces are typically a commentary on research issues or professional practices or responses to a published article. Forum pieces are required to exhibit originality, and timeliness and contribute to, or stimulate a current discussion. The journal also contains a Reviews section.

Linguistics publishes articles addressing research questions of current or general relevance that make a significant contribution to our understanding of human language as a system of communication or a cognitive, social, and historical phenomenon. This includes aspects of the grammatical organization (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax) as well as questions of meaning and use (semantics, pragmatics, discourse). Studies may deal with linguistic systems as instantiated in speaking, signing, writing, and other modes of communication, as well as the language users themselves and their communities (e.g., psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics).

Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) en-US Branches of Linguistics 3048-0949 A Pragmatics Approach of Quantity and Quality Flouting Maxim in Animated Movie https://jurnal.uhn.ac.id/index.php/broling/article/view/1735
This research describes pragmatic studies, especially maxim flouting contained in the film animated movie “The Emperor's New Groove". This research aims to find out about how are the Quality and quantity Maxim used in the animated movie. The theory used in this research is Grice (1975). In this research, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection method is observation. The steps were taken by watching the animated movie “The Emperor's New Groove" and then observing conversations that contained flouting of maxims during these conversations. The research results show that there are four types of maxims found in films. The total data is 47 data flouting. 36 (45%) data of flouting maxims Quantity, 11 (14%) data of flouting maxims Quality, 12 (15%). From the results found by researchers, the dominant maxim was flouted, namely the Quantity maxim by 36 (45%). Flouting a maxim means that the speaker cannot comply with the maxim properly. Flouting of the maxim occurs because the speaker deliberately does not obey the maxim. The reasons for using maxim flouting in films also vary, such as ignoring the interlocutor's statement, providing excessive information, and trying to change the topic of conversation so that it makes the conversation irrelevant and makes the interlocutor think ambiguously about what the speaker means.
Carolina - Pakpahan ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 1 2 94 102 Digital Rhetoric: Exploring Language Styles in Instagram Captions of English Majors https://jurnal.uhn.ac.id/index.php/broling/article/view/1734
This study aims to examine (1) the types of language styles employed by English Department students at HKBP Nommensen University Medan in their Instagram captions. The research is grounded in Martin Joos' Theory (2010) and adopts a qualitative research design. The data consist of Instagram captions written by English major students at HKBP Nommensen University, collected through documentation and questionnaires. The analysis follows the interactive model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014), which includes three stages: data condensation, data presentation, and drawing or verifying conclusions. The findings reveal that: (1) four types of language styles—formal, consultative, casual, and intimate—are used by these students in their captions. The most commonly used styles are casual, formal, and consultative; and (2) five main reasons motivate the use of these language styles. These include expressing emotions such as happiness, sadness, anxiety, and doubt; communicating for purposes like celebrations, fostering relationships, promoting self-love and confidence, and sharing well-wishes; following social media trends; and reflecting on their educational background. As English Education students, they often apply their language skills to craft effective and engaging captions that resonate with their audience.
Devi Melisa Saragi ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 1 2 82 93 Speeches of Junior High School Students in Medan https://jurnal.uhn.ac.id/index.php/broling/article/view/1733
This research aims to determine whether the twin card media affects the student's ability the to speak English, especially in SMP 37 Medan. The researcher used true experimental quantitative research, using two classes to study: the experimental and control classes. The use of twin card media is only given to the experimental class, and the control class is taught without any method or treatment. From these research studies, researchers can find differences between the experimental class and the control class. It is known from the average value of the data presented that has been calculated in SPSS version 26 that the value of the experimental class increased from 50.62 in the pre-test to 75.23 in the post-test after being given the treatment. Meanwhile, the pretest in the control class was 45.83 and the posttest score was 53.58 because the researchers did not treat it. The t-score obtained from the post-test results between the experimental class and the control class is 6.8. This shows that the results of the t-score > t table (2,064) and the sig. (2 tailed) is 0.000 < 0,005. From the data presented, it can be concluded that there is an effect of using twin card media on students' speaking abilities in class VIII students of SMP 37 Medan in the 2022/2023 Academic Year.
Asima Rohana Sinaga ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 1 2 69 81 Factors of Second Language Acquisition: A Focus on Intelligences and Motivation https://jurnal.uhn.ac.id/index.php/broling/article/view/1732
This research investigated supporting factors of foreign language acquisition that focus on intelligence and motivation factors. This study investigated the students' intelligence and motivation in mastering a foreign language in this case English at SMA Negeri 1 Besitang, especially in the twelfth grade in the academic year 2024/2025. Researchers apply a qualitative descriptive method to explore how the two factors influenced the student's ability to master English in their learning process. The researcher collected data through shared questionnaires, observation, and documentation. The data were obtained from one class observation from twelfth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Besitang. The researcher uses the data analysis technique from Miles and Huberman which has three stages: (1) data reduction (2) data display (3) drawing conclusion and verification. For the validity of the data, the researcher used the triangulation methodologist. The result of the study shows that intelligence and motivation have a big effect on the ability of the student to master foreign language acquisition. By understanding the interplay between intelligence and motivation, language teachers and learners can create more effective and engaging language learning experiences. By tailoring instruction to individual learning styles and fostering a positive learning environment, it is possible to optimize language acquisition outcomes.
Syafri - Sulastri ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-12-31 2024-12-31 1 2 64 68
